Nox’s landing in the tree-circled clearing was clumsier than usual. Dani could sense that his exhaustion was as crippling as her own, and knew that he wouldn’t be able to make it all the way back to the cave tonight. Overhead the brilliant stars blanketed the sky. They were miles from the artificial lights of civilization, and far away from Stonecrest. The chirruping of crickets and rustling of night creatures had resumed.

As soon as they were on the ground, Dani stumbled toward the edge of the clearing on shaky knees and retched until she couldn’t breathe. Her adrenaline had deserted her, leaving behind a trembling weakness that coiled around her bones. She spat the acidic taste of bile out of her mouth and crawled a few feet away, pulling her phone from her pocket. She wiped hot tears from her eyes and called her parents. Straight to voicemail. She texted them both to call her, then tried Jaime Cruz, but reached his voicemail too. It was normal for them to be out of touch during a hunt, but still her heart clenched as various scenarios filled her with dread, each more far-fetched and unlikely than the last. What if the sorcerers had done something to them? It was clear that whatever Calla had planned, it wasn’t anything as benign as a friendly partnership with the slayers.

After a few seconds of thought, she called Jaime’s husband, Luis, who she’d only met a handful of times. The only reason she had his number was because her parents were big believers in emergency contacts. Luis must’ve had her number saved as well, because he greeted her by name.

“I was just wondering if you’d heard from Jaime or my parents recently?” she asked.

“¿Puedes repetir eso?” There was a crash and chorus of laughter on his side, followed by his muffled shouting in Spanish. Dani could only make out pieces of what he was saying—someone had either broken a plate or robbed a cat. Her mother only spoke Spanish when she was around her side of the family, so Dani hadn’t learned much growing up. She and Eden had both taken the elective in school, but while Eden had studied and practiced enough outside class to be conversationally fluent, Dani had barely passed the final exam. Tomás had offered several times to practice with her, but between school and slayer training, there never seemed to be any time for mastering a second language. Like so many other things in her life, she’d consigned it to the hazy territory of “maybe one day.”

“Sorry,” Luis said at last into the phone. “I’ve got some friends over. What was that about Jaime?”

“I just wanted to know if you’ve heard from him or my parents,” she repeated, trying to sound casual. It was a little disorienting to be reminded that, for most people, this was a typical Friday night.

“Oh, not since he left, sorry. Something wrong?”

“No,” she said quickly. “I just had to ask my parents something. It’s okay.
